SADISSONANZ is a work by grau& (Ariel William Orah, Max Kupi, Pia Achternkamp), exploring the question on “How do individual origins and the privileges that come with them influence the collaborative artistic process, and How to turn that theme into an object of discourse within a sound piece??”.
The idea of this piece started by reflecting our artistic constellation which consists of two German artists and one German based Indonesian diaspora artist. In the post migrant world, this kind of constellation represents the success point of “living in diversity” or the success of the integration process that one migrant needs to have in order to realize a harmonic living condition with local people or community. However, after experiencing more than 5 years working together, we realized there are many layers of misunderstanding and conflicts that come beyond accepting cultural differences such : (white) privilege and structural discrimination.
The main objectives were as follows:
- To address the issue of privilege and capture diverse perspectives and experiences from as many different perspectives as possible.
- Developing an artistic strategy to make the insights gained tangible for the public. Strategic question: How can privilege-induced dissonance be made audible and thus experienced by others?
- Implementation of the artistic strategy in the form of sound installation, performance and website.
Research phase 1 performed in Berlin-Germany on March 2023 in cooperation with Soydivision Kollektiv, Research phase 2 performed in Bandung-Indonesia on April 2023 in the framework of LINTAS Residency by Ra.kar.sa Foundation Bandung and Soydivision Kollektiv Berlin. This project funded by FEB 3 Program by Musikfonds e.V. Travel grants to Indonesia supported by Berlin Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa. Artist talk event supported by Goethe Institute Bandung-Indonesien.

Research Phase
The project started with a research phase 1 in the form of literature research and participatory empathy workshop in Berlin. Literature research focus on cognitive dissonance theory and Autoethnography as a based for further execute participatory empathy workshop.
Participatory empathy workshop : examining the Intersections of Privilege through Collaborative Autoethnography approach, and further developing artistic strategy to turn workshop results into an object of discourse within a sound/musical piece. This workshop was presented as “Empathy Supper”, a communal culinary experience that i made with soydivision where we cooked together and approached the topic of privilege discursively and artistically-creatively with participants. In order to not only represent a Western-centered perspective on the topic, we conducted one of the workshops in Berlin, Germany (about 10 participants via open call, dish: hot pot) and one workshop in Bandung, Indonesia (about 30 participants recruited in collaboration with local community projects, dish: spaetzle).

Research data synthesis and Artistic Strategy
After both of the Research phases, we were then did the analyzing data and focus on various sentences that we found essentials and meaningful.
As an essential element of the artistic strategy for the sound installation and performance we decided to integrate a software simulation of the photoelectronic ANS synthesizer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANS_synthesizer), which enables the "translation" and "playback" of sound (in our case music recordings as well as quotes from the two Empathy Supper) into abstract sound spectrograms. For visualization, these sound spectrograms were printed on large fabric banners. Through an app, these could then also be interactively "played" by visitors.
